OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY FOR ADOLESCENTS

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY FOR ALL AGES

Occupational Therapy for Adolescents

Occupational therapy (OT) in our practice supports adolescents as they develop the skills needed to navigate the increasing demands of school, relationships, and independence. Many of the teens we serve are neurodivergent—including those with ADHD, autism, sensory processing differences, or learning differences—and may experience challenges with executive functioning, organization, emotional intensity, sensory regulation, and managing daily responsibilities.

Rather than focusing solely on outward behavior, occupational therapy looks deeper at the systems that influence how teens function in their everyday lives. OT helps adolescents recognize their internal body signals and develop sensory and regulation strategies that help them stay calm, focused, and organized during school, social interactions, and daily responsibilities. When difficulties arise, the goal is not simply to change behavior, but to better understand what may be driving it. Occupational therapists work to uncover the sensory, environmental, or cognitive factors contributing to stress or overwhelm, providing teens and their families with practical tools for co-regulation, independence, and self-management.

Sessions incorporate purposeful activities and therapeutic experiences that allow adolescents to practice responding to stress with confidence, resilience, and greater self-awareness. Through engaging and developmentally appropriate approaches, teens may build skills in executive functioning, time management, sensory regulation, self-advocacy, and navigating academic and social expectations.

Within our practice, occupational therapy works alongside traditional talk therapy, adolescent play therapy, and expressive arts therapy in a collaborative and complementary way. While therapeutic services focus on emotional expression, identity development, and relational growth, occupational therapy supports the sensory, cognitive, and functional foundations that help adolescents participate more successfully in their daily environments.

Together, these approaches support the whole family—helping adolescents develop greater self-awareness, confidence, and independence, while empowering parents with insight and practical strategies to support their teen through the challenges of adolescence.
